China, her history, her relationship with the EU member states and their future prospect

Mr.Nirj Deva, MEP, was elected in 1999 as one of the Conservatives' five MEPs representing the South East and joined a new European Parliament with a clear centre-right majority - the first in a decade. He was re-elected in 2004. He is the first person in history to be born in one continent (Asia), to be elected to parliament in another continent (UK) and then elected to represent that country as a member of a multi-national parliament (the European Parliament). As a first Asian-born active political figure in the west, he is also the chairman of Friendship Groups for China, Bangladesh; Sri Lanka; Indonesia; Afghanistan; in the European Parliament.In this lecture, he will examine the relationship of China and the EU member states, from a historical point of view, and will conclude with his vision on the future prospects of the Sino-EU relationship.
